BMI Calculator
about the Body Mass Index BEFORE using the table or calculator.
This page offers you a very simple method for determining your level of "fatness" by comparing your weight to your height. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a relatively recent invention that enjoys strong support from many weight management professionals because it is simple to use, correlates to fatness, and applies to both men and women. BMI is based on guidelines prepared by the U.S. Federal Government and is intended to bring the U.S. into line with the definition of "overweight" used by other countries and the World Health Organization. (The guidelines and BMI were developed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a part of the National Institites of Health.)
BMI CALCULATION
The Body Mass Index value equals a person's weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of the person's height in meters. Written as a formula:
weight in kilograms
BMI = ----------------------------------------------------------
(height in meters) x (height in meters)
where: 1 kilogram = 0.45359 pounds 1 meter = 39.37000 inches
RISK OF ASSOCIATED DISEASE BASED ON BMI AND WAIST SIZE
As a person's BMI value rises above 25, the risk of health problems (including diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure) begins to increase. The increased risk associated with various BMI values are as follows:
| BMI |
Weight Category |
Waist less than or equal to 40" (men) or 35" (women) |
Waist greater than 40" (men) or 35" (women) |

USING THE BMI TABLE --- drop down to BMI Table
To quickly estimate your BMI, use the table shown below. Find the vertical column that best states your height, and the horizontal row that best states your weight. Then read the BMI value where the column and row intersect in the table. For example, a person who is 5'8" and weighs 160 pounds will read the red 24.3 value from the table. A person whose height or weight falls between two columns or rows, can either use the nearest height or weight shown OR can make two different readings and split the difference. For example, a person 5'9" and 157 pounds can read the 23.6 value for a 5'8"/155# person and the 23.0 value for a 5'10"/160# person -- or split the difference between the two numbers (i.e., 23.3).
USING THE CALCULATOR --- drop down to BMI Calculator
For a more precise calculation of your BMI, enter your height and weight into the calculator below the table, click on the Calculate BMI button, and read off your personal BMI value and weight category.
NOTE!
PLEASE NOTE that BMI overestimates fatness in people who are muscular or athletic. The overestimate occurs because muscle weighs more than fat, and a racewalker who has well developed muscles could obtain a BMI value that is overstated by as much as a couple of points. Because top racewalkers try not to build muscle bulk, BMI overestimates should be minimal for them. (For example, the BMI values for the top U.S. male 20K racewalkers in 1995 -- those whose best times were below 1:30:00 -- ranged from 19.3 to 22.5 and averaged 20.9. The BMI values for the top U.S. female 10K racewalkers in 1995 -- those whose best times were below 48:00 -- ranged from 17.6 to 20.4 and averaged 19.0.)
It should also be noted that the BMI process does not work very well for children, adolescents, the elderly or pregnant women.
